Reeva turned back to Tony. She aimed the gun at his head. “Tell Sofia this ends now. She lands the plane, or I kill you.”

“That won’t work,” Brandon said. “You won’t rush the cockpit with Tony dead, because who lands the plane, then? She knows Cassie’s dead by now.”

“Reeva, he’s right,” Jay said. “We’re back to letting Sofia land the plane where she wants and hoping this is a ransom situation.”

“It can’t be, at this point,” Reeva said. “Not after Tony came out of the cockpit and said he doesn’t want us going in there.”

“I didn’t say I didn’t want you going in there. I said Sofia will dump the plane if you do. And then when you wanted the gun, I knew you were the accomplice. You’re new to the family, Reeva. You’ve been pushing all along to sit tight, the kids said. But you didn’t think they would rush the cockpit. You thought they’d listen to you and wait. Then I get thrown out here and you panic, because this wasn’t part of the plan, right?”

“He’s right,” Tim said. “He’s right.”

“Hang on,” Emily said. “If Reeva’s with Sofia, then why would she want to rush the cockpit?”

“Exactly,” Reeva said.

“Then why are you pointing the gun at us?” Tony said.

“I’m pointing it at you,” Reeva said.

“You were pointing it at me before,” Tim said.

“If she’s with Sofia, then she isn’t going to raid the cockpit,” Tony said. “She’ll run to it, and Sofia will let her in. Then they’ll lock the door, the both of them in there with the gun.”

“So?” Reeva said. “If your plan is to wait this out, why would you care if I’m in there with Sofia?”

“Because with everybody’s emotions running high, I can see the kids panicking and taking another shot at breaching the cockpit. You’ll have to shoot them.”

“Not me,” Tim said. “I’m not going near that cockpit.”

“I’m not losing another one of my passengers,” Tony said, looking at Emily.

“Then why wouldn’t I just shoot you all now?” Reeva said.

“Because a plane full of dead hostages doesn’t do you any good,” Tony said. “The other thing is, as much as I can’t figure out why you’re acting the way you are, waving around the gun, I can’t be a hundred percent sure you are with Sofia.” He nodded at the gun. “Why’d you even bother to lock it up in the first place?”

“You wanted it locked up as much as I did,” Reeva said. “You played it off nonchalantly, ‘It’s a family flight, Reeva,’ but you knew that if I had the gun, I’d be able to storm the cockpit.”

“We agree on one thing,” Tony said. “I definitely do not want you to have that gun.”

“This doesn’t have to be an either-or situation,” Emily said. “Tony, Reeva, you suspect each other, but say you both really are on the same side.”

“Which side?” Tim said. “Good or bad?”

“Tony, you’re saying this is a ransom scenario, and we’re better off letting Sofia land the plane.
